belum tau pelajaran, masih capek, belum liat sekolahan juga..

huh.. malang.

sampe di sekolah, kenalan ama si shintul, ma temen temen yang laennya..

hari hari pertama ak ngikut shinta mulu, kemana pun dia pergi dibelakangnya selalu ada ak, karna wktu tu ak takut klo nyasar ato gimna.. { haaha }

huh. tapi walopun seru sekolah disini, tapi tetep aja kangen ma kota tercinta,

aaaaaaaa.. rasanya masih lamaa..

tapi klo ninggalin sini juga rasanya gimana gitu..

Princess Hours (Korean: 궁, Hanja: 宫, romanized as Goong and also known as The Imperial Household, Love in Palace, Palace Love or Palace, its literal translation and alternate official title) is a popular soonjong manhwa (Korean girls’ comic) by Park So-Hee. It was adapted into an even more well-known live-action comedy/drama series, which had its first season run from January 11 to March 30, 2006. It was distributed by Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation, which ran episodes on Wednesdays and Thursdays every week until the show’s completion. The original manhwa (which, as of July 2007, has run for 15 volumes) is being published in English as Goong, while the drama has been released on DVD in North America as Palace by YA Entertainment.

Princess Hours became one of MBC’s most popular dramas of 2006, second only to Jumong[1]. Overall, the show was the tenth most popular drama of 2006, according to TNS Media. Due to the success of the first season, a second season was to be produced, a rare occasion in the Korean television industry. However, there was controversy over who had the rights to make the sequel, and as a result, two separate parties planned different seasons. However, the sequel, Goong 2 will no longer be produced due to the withdrawal of two main actors. The spin-off Goong S started its run on January 10, 2007.

Synopsis

Set in an alternate 21st-century reality where Korea possesses a royal family, this show revolves around the lives of the Crown Prince (Wangsaeja) Lee Shin, and his new bride, Chae-kyeong. The depicted royal family in the show is modelled after the last royal family of Korea, which in reality reigned until the start of the Japanese Occupation in 1911 and was not reinstated after Japanese surrender in WW2.

The series starts off with the news that the King, Shin’s father, is very ill. With the grim outlook on the King’s health, the royal family scrambles to find a wife for Shin, so as to allow him to take over the royal throne if the situation requires. Despite being in love with another girl, the ambitious and talented ballerina Hyo-rin whom Shin initially proposed to (she rejects him to pursue her ballet dreams), Shin eventually marries a commoner to whom he was betrothed by his late grandfather in an old agreement with the girl’s grandfather. Shin marries the headstrong yet lovable Chae-kyeong after Hyo-rin’s rejection. Despite initially feeling nothing for Chae-kyeong, love eventually blossoms between the couple.

In the meantime, however, matters are further complicated with the return of Lee Yul and his mother Lady Hwa-Young, who was once the Crown Princess (Bingoong) before the death of her husband, the late Crown Prince, older brother of the current King. Yul and his mother were chased out of the palace some time after the death of his father, and it is later revealed that this was due to the King’s discovery of an affair between Yul’s mother and the current King who was his father’s younger brother. Yul’s mother had returned with a sinister motive in mind; to restore her son back to the throne, which would have been his eventually, if his father had not died. A series of events befall the palace with the schemes Yul’s mother carries out, and is further intensified by the various scandals involving the royal family, which are inclusive of the Shin’s continuing relationship with his old flame Hyo-rin, and the budding love Yul develops for Chae-kyeong, his cousin’s new-found bride.

In the end of the series, Shin’s sister takes the throne and Shin and Chae-kyeong get married once more in a Catholic church in Macau (since they haven’t married for love yet). It is strongly implied that Chae-kyeong is pregnant at the end of the series since she supposedly threw up.

Shin Chae-Kyeong (신채경)

Portrayed by Yoon Eun Hye, Shin Chae-kyeong is a very effervescent, normal high school girl. She attends the same school as Lee Shin, the Crown Prince of Korea. Her grandfather was best friends with the previous King. To honor his friend, the previous King dictated that Chae-kyeong is to become the Crown Princess, which means that she is to marry whoever is the Crown Prince at the time of the marriage. Although she often seems immature and irritating, she is a kindhearted, innocent, honest person. Often called “Pig” by her younger brother, Chae-kyeong marries the prince to save her family from bankruptcy. Her initial reaction to Lee Shin is one of irritation but she falls in love with him in the earlier part of the series, not knowing that he, in return, feels the same way, until the last few episodes. Although she regards Lee Yul only as a friend and cousin-in-law, he falls in love with her. In the Philippine airing, her name is “Janelle”.

Lee Shin (이신)

The crown prince of Korea, Lee Shin, as portrayed by model and actor Joo Ji Hoon, is seen as a smug, indifferent, insensitive young man. After getting rejected by his girlfriend when he proposes to her, he decides to go along with his elders’ arranged marriage with Shin Chae-kyeong. At first, he was irritated by her naivete and enthusiasm, but as he recognizes how genuinely sweet she is, he begins to open his heart to her, and falls in love. Throughout the series, it becomes obvious that inside, he is just a lonely, sensitive, warm and kind young man. He also owns a teddy bear, Alfred, the only thing that he can let his guard down for, which is used as a focal point throughout the series. As his cousin re-enters the picture after being forced out of the country many years earlier, the prince quickly butts head with him, as Lee Yul is a contender not only for the throne, but for the crown princess Chae-kyeong’s love. Chae-kyeong does not realize this until later on in the story. In the Philippine airing, he is “Gian”.

Lee Yool (이율)

Kim Jeong Hoon plays Lee Yool, Shin’s cousin. He returns from a long stay in England with his mother, the widow of the former crown prince. The opposite of Shin, he is warm, kindhearted, sweet, and romantic–an instant hit with the girls. Interested in Chae-kyeong, their friendship grows to love on his side, while she remains innocently unaware of it until much later. Although the position of the Crown Prince originally belonged to him, it was given to his cousin when Yool’s father died in a car accident and his mother was found to have had an affair with his uncle, who she was originally in love with, but she decides to marry his brother, the crown prince, wanting her son to inherit the title of crown prince. Originally uninterested in the throne, Yool decides to follow his mother’s wishes and compete with Shin for the throne after falling in love with Chae-kyeong. In the end, after realizing that Chae-kyeong and Shin truly love each other, and after discovering his mother’s affair with the King, he passes up both the chance of being King and having Chae-kyeong as a wife. He is “Troy” in the Philippine airing.

Min Hyo-rin (민효린)

Portrayed by Sung Ji Hyo, Hyo-rin is a skilled ballerina. She is beautiful, intelligent, accomplished–basically, perfect in every way possible. In the beginning, she is Shin’s girlfriend, and he proposes to her. However, she rejects him, not only because she thinks he is joking, but also because she does not wish to give up her dreams of becoming a star ballerina. When she sees Chae-kyeong and Shin’s wedding and how Chae-kyeong is loved by the people (similar to Diana, Princess of Wales), she regrets her hasty decision, and does everything she can to oust Chae-kyeong from her position. Hyo-rin finds ways to draw Shin back to her, including a “chance” meeting in Thailand, but simply ends up hurting herself, resulting in attempting suicide. Later, however, she decides that Shin does truly love Chae-kyeong, and she ultimately gives him up and decides to just concentrate on her ballet. She is “Monique” in the Philippine airing.

Filming continued despite Group 8 facing lawsuits due to the unlawful use of Goong in the title. [6] However, MBC has looked into this issue with Eight Peaks and have stated that the channel station and original production company both own the rights of the name.[7] Goong S will still be used for this season, with the subtitle of “Prince Who“. Goong S was broadcasted from January 10 to March 15, 2007, with no cast members returning for this spinoff.

Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang (쾌걸 춘향, Kwae-geol Chun-hyang), also known as Sassy Girl Chun Hyang, is a Korean television series about two high school students, Chun-Hyang and Mong-ryong, who accidentally spend a night together and are forced into marriage. The series is based on the 2005 interpretation of the folktale Chunhyangga.

For the year 2005, Sassy Girl was one of the highest rating shows in Korea. Consistently on the top ten list, it has been a favorite among viewing public because of its different approach on love and marriage.

Summary

Delightful Girl Chun Hyang is the 2005 interpretation of the Legend of Chun-hyang. The story begins when Lee Mong-ryong, son of a famous chief of police, is transferred from Seoul to a high school in Namwon, North Jeolla Province, because he is a trouble maker. He accidentally bumps into Chun-hyang, shoots embarrassing photos of her and ends up swapping her cell phone with his. As a result, they are constantly in touch with each other and find out they attend the same school. Mong-ryong constantly bullies Chun-hyang and thanks to him, she becomes slightly sick. Feeling guilty, he visits her, only to mistakenly drink a whole bottle of wine, assuming it is juice. He immediately falls asleep on the only bed in the house, which consequently is the one Chun-Hyang is sleeping in. Thus, they spend the night with each other. Nothing sexually occurs, but thanks to their best friends, who know what happened and accidentally announce it on the school intercom, they are forced to marry each other in order to save their families’ reputation, seeing as everyone at school assumes they have slept together. They eventually fall in love with each other, but Mong-Ryong’s previous crush, Hong Chae-Rin, after rejecting him, then discovering his marriage, becomes jealous and tries to win him back. There is also the problem of Byun Hak-Do, an extremely successful talent agency director who falls in love with Chun-Hyang.

In order to help him get to college, Chun-Hyang helps him to his study so that he could be with Chae-Rin at Han-guk University, the most prestigious university in Korea. They are both accepted, but as she is unable to pay the tuition, she does not attend and tells her family-in-law she will meet them in Seoul, not revealing that her mother is actually on the run. When Mong-Ryong finally does find Chun-Hyang, he tries again and again to reveal his feelings for her, while unearthing her feelings for him by moving into her new location. When he finally confesses outright, she denies him, claiming she never loved him, because of Chae-Rin’s harsh statement that Mong-Ryong was merely pitying her and wished only to pay her back.

When the two finally do confess to each other, there is still one more problem. Byun Hak-Do, being rich, handsome and successful, assumes he could have any woman in the world, but when Chun-Hyang rejects him, he attempts to take her by blackmail. Several days before the real wedding between Mong-Ryong and Chun-Hyang, Mong-Ryong witnesses a woman being assaulted and attempts to save her. It turns out to be a plot, and so Mong-Ryong is now a criminal on the run. Byun Hak-Do carries an edited video of the security camera, putting Mong-Ryong in a bad light, and threatens Chun-Hyang that unless she goes to him, he will expose the video to the world. Chun-Hyang agrees and so Mong-Ryong is freed, but now, Chun-Hyang pretends to want to divorce him immediately to keep her end of the bargain. When the divorce is complete, she goes to Mr. Byun and the two of them prepare to travel to Japan, but at the last minute, she runs off and hides from both Mr. Byun and Mong-Ryong.

Several years pass and Mong-Ryong is now a famous prosecutor, the District Attorney of Seoul. Chun-Hyang has snuck off to Busan and now owns an accesories factory. Mr. Byun has just returned from Japan and people assume that his “fiancee” is still there as well. At the wedding of Mong-Ryong’s and Chun-Hyang’s two best friends,Bang Ji-hyuk and Han Dan-hee, Chun-Hyang sneaks in to drop off a present, and as she leaves, Mr. Byun sees her. In a rush to leave, she accidentally scrapes the car next to her, which is consequently Mong-Ryong’s car. The two start a heated argument through Chun-Hyang’s assistant, Kim Dong-Su, who goes to pay Mong-Ryong the money they owe for his car. Several crooks who follow assume Kim Dong-Su to be an informant and kidnap him. When the police rescue him, they discover the wedding picture from high school between Mong-Ryong and Chun-Hyang and show it to Mong-Ryong. When he sees it, he uses it to find Chun-Hyang again, but she still acts unhappy to see him, still frightened from knowing what Byun Hak-do has.

Finally, Byun Hak-do realizes that there are just some things in the world that he can’t have, and finally releases the full unedited version of the tape so that everyone can see Mong-Ryong’s true intentions.

To add to the happily ever after, Mong-Ryong re-proposes to Chun-Hyang and the two are married again.

Setting

This drama attempts to answer the question of whether two people — a famous actor and an ordinary woman — can learn to love each other in a marriage agreed only on paper. It also explores the meaning of the family by presenting that no matter how hard the present may seem, the world is still a good place because of those who bring hopes into our lives through their presence alone.

This drama features diverse characters: considerate, caring, frank, patient, and sticking to life’s basic values. But no matter how different the personalities, everyone finds happiness in the end.

This drama is based upon a manhwa of the same title, Full House by the Korean cartoonist Won Sooyeon.

Plot summary

Han Ji-Eun (Song Hye Kyo) lives in a house called Full House, built by her father. She is an aspiring novelist. One day, two of her friends, for money reasons, trick her and sell her house – when she returns from a vacation, she discovers it has been sold to Lee Young-Jae (비/Bi (Rain)), an actor who has just shot to stardom. Though they don’t get along with each other, as she is messy and he has a bad temper and an affection for cleaning, they agree to live with each other and Ji-Eun works as his maid in order to buy her house back. Out of a misunderstanding and Young-Jae’s ill-fated try to make the love of his life, Kang Hye-Won (Han Eun Jung) jealous, Young-Jae marries Ji-Eun. They set up a contract for the marriage to last six months. During that time, complications ensue and Ji-Eun and Young-Jae become attracted to each other. Also, Ji-Eun starts to hold a strong bond with Young-Jae’s family. However, Young-Jae’s bad temper along with the romantic attentions of Yoo Min-Hyuk (Kim Sung Soo), Ji-Eun’s handsome and friendly publisher, starts to create a rift between the couple. Young-Jae and Ji-Eun get a divorce and he moves away. When he returns, he realizes that Ji-Eun hasn’t married yet and knows that he has fallen in love with her – and she with him. He proposes to her, this time for the right reasons, and finally, they get married the second time and live happily ever after.

Characters

Han Ji-Eun (Jessie Han) ~ Song Hye Kyo

Ji-Eun is cheerful, optimistic and loyal to her friends. She is naive and not very smart, but she makes up for it with her spunk and good heart. Her journey with Young Jae shows how much she loves and what she is willing to do to protect the people she loves. She is an orphaned online novelist who lives in a beautiful house (called FULL HOUSE) which she inherited from her parents. Her troubles started when her closest friends tricked her by sending her on a trip to Shanghai so they could sell her house behind her back.

Lee Young-Jae (Justin Lee) ~ Bi (Rain)

Young-Jae is a top Korean actor. He does his utmost not to hurt other people and not to be hurt himself. Every movie he starred in became a blockbuster. He is stubborn when it comes to selecting which movies to star in, but he has received much acclaim for his talent. Although Young-Jae always behaves and speaks as he wants, he does that only to protect himself from being hurt and not to hurt others. People think of him as a very candid person, but that is also Young-Jae’s strategy to hide himself – or rather his failure to express himself to the fullest. As one who is unaccustomed to being frank and open, Young-jae is bad at making friends and very proud of his ideals and principles. He deeply loves his childhood friend, Hye-Won, even though she shows him no affection. One day, he stumbles upon Ji-Eun and slowly falls in love with her.

Kang Hye-Won (Lorraine Kang) ~ Han Eun Jung

Hye-Won is the daughter of Doctor Lee’s friend. She is a fashion designer, who designs Young-Jae’s clothes. She has known Young-Jae’s family since her childhood. Hye-won has lived her entire life in abundance and has had many choices. She comes from a rich family, and is accustomed to being loved. She has never been rejected by anybody, until Min-Hyuk, and only feels content when everybody around her loves her.

Yoo Min-Hyuk (Luigi Yoo) ~ Kim Sung Soo

Min-Hyuk is a director of a large media company. He dreams of establishing Asia’s Walt Disney or Fox. He is tenacious and smart, and respected and recognized for his skills. He is determined to remain one for the rest of his life. He possesses sophisticated manners and is very eloquent – a Prince Charming that any girl could dream of. Min-Hyuk believes that life is too short to live it without fun. Unlike his seemingly unrestricted personality, he is very composed and prudent.

Filming location

Full House was filmed in the Gwangyeok-si area of Incheon. Located near Incheon International Airport, the place may be reached in a ten-minute boat ride from Sammok Harbor to this quiet, seashore getaway. Unlike other filming locations in Korea, this is an actual house. Made mostly of wood, this house, which is a private-owned vacation house, cost approximately the equivalent of one million United States dollars to build. The beach front property looks out onto open waters, with elegant views that could be used on any postcard. Many fans of the miniseries make a pilgrimage to this now famous home. Nearby sightseeing locations include Jogak (sculpture) Park on Modo Island; a bridge connects these two islands.

Korea’s first astronaut has transferred safely to the International Space Station (ISS) following a successful docking in earth’s orbit, a state-run aerospace institute said Friday (April 11).The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) said hatches between the Soyuz spacecraft and the ISS were opened at 15:40 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) to allow Yi So-yeon to cross over from the space station.

It said Yi moved into the multinational space station along with the commander of the Soyuz spacecraft Sergey Volkov and flight engineer Oleg Kononenko and was welcomed by the three crew members.

Soyuz docked successfully at 12:57 GMT with the next three hours being used to firmly secure the spacecraft to the ISS and stabilize atmospheric pressure.

Korea’s first astronaut, who looked excited, then talked to the head of KARI, Paik Hong-yul, via a communications link at the mission control center (MCC) in Moscow.

The 29-year-old bio systems engineer said that she will do her best to fulfill her mission during her nine-day stay at the space station and meet the expectations of all Koreans.

<img class="chimg_photo" style="width:280px;height:207px;" src="http://www.korea.net/cheditor40_asp/cheditor/attach/20084119512025458.jpg" border="0" alt="Guests and officials look at screens in the Space Mission Control Centre in Korolyov, outside Moscow, Thursday (April 10), showing a press conference of Korean astronaut Yi So-yeon (bottom), Flight Engineer Russian Oleg Kononenko (middle row, left) and Commander Russian Sergei Volkov (middle row, right) of the 17th International Space Station crew, astronaut Garrett Reisman (back row, left), ISS Commander Peggy Whitson (back row center) and Flight Engineer Yuri Malenchenko (back row, right) after the Soyuz TMA-12 spacecraft docked at the ISS.
“I still cannot believe I am in space, but I plan to do my utmost to carry out my assignments,” Yi said. She added that she hoped a time will come when all Koreans can visit space. The Daejeon-based aerospace institute, meanwhile, said South Korea’s first astronaut will immediately commence three experiments assigned to her on the ISS including the observation of fruitflies and the growing of microbes. She is expected to complete 18 experiments before her return trip, planned for April 19.

The aerospace institute, meanwhile, said 155 other people — including five tourists — have previously visited the space station, which began to be assembled in space from 1998.

Astronauts have been occupying the orbiting station since November 2000.

The ISS is a joint project between the United States, Russia, Japan, Canada and eleven European countries, with final construction to be completed in 2010.

Yi, a KARI researcher, made history by becoming the first Korea to reach orbit on Tuesday, following a successful launch from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

She is the 49th woman to reach space, and the second Asian woman to make a space flight after a Japanese woman astronaut made two trips in the 1990s.

There was a bit of a rumble at the National Institute of Crop Science (under the Rural Development Administration) when Moon Jung-kyung, a researcher there, succeeded in developing a new type of soybean. The “Sinhwa Soybean,” as it is named, has proved to be far superior both in quality and quantity of production as well as in resistance to harmful insects and viruses.

“Six years of hard work and we did it,” Moon said. “We have opened a new door in the agricultural sector. This could be the next big thing for our export market together, along with semiconductors and other electronic products,” he said.

The Rural Development Administration explained that thanks to the virus-resistant characteristics, the new soybean can be grown without using pesticides, making the crop much safer for human health. Since the new kind allows an 11 percent increase in production, this is also expected to raise the income of farming households.

“The Sinhwa Soybean contains 3,590㎍/g of isoflavone. That’s 24 percent more then that contained by the best soy products so far,” Moon said. Isoflavone, one of the main soy proteins known to keep cells healthy by acting as antioxidants within the body is known to be effective in easing melancholy, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and heart disease, as well as preventing cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends one consume at least 25g of isoflavone a day.

The success comes amid the global rise in wheat prices, which has led to rise of other agricultural products and triggered fears of ‘agflation’ — the increase of food prices due to increased demands in alternative fuels like corn-based ethanol. The only way to survive from likely future turmoil is to enhance the competitiveness of own crops at home. The development of superior agro-products has become a necessity.

Local specialty for every city/ county

Hanging beneath the roof are blocks of meju, the fermented bean paste used to make soup in Korea.

According to recent data released by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry & Fishery, future agriculture supply and demand look even more unstable than before. What with the worsening climate and continued rises in oil prices, the search for alternative sources — namely, farm products – will increase, and this particular sector could become the next hot market around the globe.

Against this backdrop, the Korean government has mapped out the nation’s six main fermented food products as the next high-value agricultural exports of the future: gochujang (hot pepper paste), doenjang (bean paste), ganjang (soybean sauce), bay salt (natural sea salt), kimchi (seasoned and fermented cabbage) and jeotgal (salted fermented food. The idea was also reported to President Lee Myung-bak last month in March.

Toward that end, Jeollabuk-do (North Jeolla Province) looks to foster a global food cluster in the region complete with food companies, institutes and centers. This would allow a one-stop system from research to production, distribution and export. A food cluster committee made up of officials from both public and private sectors is expected to be formed by the end of April. The food cluster is to be established by 2012. There will also be cluster for ‘one food specialty per city/ county’ for over 140 cities/ counties.

The ministry that spearheads the move intends to focus especially on the core technology of fermentation, packaging, high functionality and environment-friendliness. It further plans to diversify agriculture-related funds to various food companies to encourage the injection of private capital and upgrade the scale of agriculture funds, worth around 60 billion won in 2007, to 230 billion won by 2012.

The government also plans to ease building regulations for facilities that belong to small-scale food manufacturers, and extend assistance for small and medium sized businesses to modernize their facilities.

Standardization of name and recipes for Korean cuisine

<img class="chimg_photo" style="width:200px;height:234px;" src="http://www.korea.net/cheditor40_asp/cheditor/attach/200841117483122168.jpg" border="0" alt="Foreign women enjoying the experience of making gochujang, Korean hot pepper paste.

Foreign women enjoying the experience of making gochujang, Korean hot pepper paste. The function was hosted by Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation.

Standardization of some 300 types of Korean cuisine as well as their official names is another task at home. This is in line with the government strategy to develop traditional dishes as one of the top 5 cuisines of the world. About two or three food institutes specializing in traditional dishes would be handpicked by the government to be developed into a global food training center. An accreditation system will be gradually introduced to be applied to Korean restaurants abroad after much study. The government is further reviewing ways to provide information and financial assistance to local food business looking to advance abroad.

With the rise in wheat prices, the government has decided to use rice to make noodles. Other projects to produce high-quality processed food out of rice continue as the country is obliged to import a certain amount of rice every year. The new rice-based food should also be higher in quality and function, according to the government plan. In line, the related government agency is also considering assistance for rice manufacturers to upgrade their facilities.

The Korean Food Research Institute announced last February it has succeeded in developing rice noodles completely free of wheat flour. One food business is also known to be in the middle of constructing a milling factory, for rice not flour.

The government is also eyeing the overseas market to promote local dishes. The Ministry has been attending as many food exhibitions as possible around the world to promote Korean agricultural products. Last March the ministry sent its officials to take part in a food exposition in Tokyo (Foodex Japan 2008) – the largest of its kind in Asia. At the time a total of 98 food businesses attended the function to further widen the market to Japan, the biggest importer of Korean agriculture.

The first week of September is declared a food week for this year by the ministry. A global food festival will be launched in which some of the best agricultural products, fermented food and traditional liquors will be on display. Various food companies and Korean restaurant business will participate both from home and abroad as well embassy officials and importers.

Bali has been inhabited first by the descendants of a people who migrated through mainland Asia to the Indonesian archipelago and were thought to have first settled in Bali around 3000 BC.[citation needed] Stone tools dating from this time have been found near the village of Cekik in the island’s west.

Balinese culture was strongly influenced by Indian, and particularly Sanskrit culture, in a process beginning around the 1st century AD. The name Balidwipa has been discovered from various inscriptions, including the Blanjong charter issued by Sri Kesari Warmadewa in 913 AD and mentioning Walidwipa. It was during this time that the complex irrigation system subak was developed to grow rice. Some religious and cultural traditions still in existence today can be traced back to this period. The Hindu Majapahit Empire (1293–1520 AD) on eastern Java founded a Balinese colony in 1343. When the empire declined, there was an exodus of intellectuals, artists, priests and musicians from Java to Bali in the 15th century.

The First European contact with Bali is thought to have been when Dutch explorer Cornelis de Houtman arrived in 1597, though a Portuguese ship had foundered off the Bukit Peninsula as early as 1585.[citation needed] Dutch rule over Bali came later, was more aggressively fought for, and was never as well established as in other parts of Indonesia such as Java and Maluku.

In the 1840s, a presence in Bali was established, first in the island’s north, by playing various distrustful Balinese realms against each other. The Dutch mounted large naval and ground assaults first against the Sanur region and then Denpasar. The Balinese were hopelessly overwhelmed in number and armament, but rather than face the humiliation of surrender, they mounted a final defensive but suicidal assault, or puputan. Despite Dutch demands for surrender, an estimated 4,000 Balinese marched to their death against the invaders. Afterwards the Dutch governors were able to exercise little influence over the island, and local control over religion and culture generally remained intact.

Japan occupied Bali during World War II during which time a Balinese military officer, Gusti Ngurah Rai, formed a Balinese ‘freedom army’. Following Japan’s Pacific surrender in August 1945, the Dutch promptly returned to Indonesia, including Bali, immediately to reinstate their pre-war colonial administration. This was resisted by the Balinese rebels now using Japanese weapons.

On 20 November 1946, the Battle of Marga was fought in Tabanan in central Bali. Colonel I Gusti Ngurah Rai, 29 years old, finally rallied his forces in east Bali at Marga Rana, where they made a suicide attack on the heavily armed Dutch. The Balinese battalion was entirely wiped out, breaking the last thread of Balinese military resistance. In 1946 the Dutch constituted Bali as one of the 13 administrative districts of the newly-proclaimed Republic of East Indonesia, a rival state to the Republic of Indonesia which was proclaimed and headed by Sukarno and Hatta. Bali was included in the “Republic of the United States of Indonesia” when the Netherlands recognised Indonesian independence on 29 December 1949. In 1950 Bali officially renounced the Dutch union and legally became a province within the Republic of Indonesia.

The 1963 eruption of Mount Agung killed thousands, created economic havoc and forced many displaced Balinese to be transmigrated to other parts of Indonesia.

In 1965, after a failed coup d’etat in Jakarta against the national government of Indonesia, Bali, along with other regions of Indonesia most notably Java, was the scene of widespread killings of (often falsely-accused) members and sympathizers of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI) by right-wing General Suharto-sponsored militias. Possibly more than 100,000 Balinese were killed although the exact numbers are unknown to date and the events remain legally undisclosed.[2] Many unmarked but well known mass graves of victims are located around the island[citation needed].

On October 12, 2002, a car bomb attack in the tourist resort of Kuta killed 202 people, largely foreign tourists and injured a further 209. Further bombings occurred three years later in Kuta and nearby Jimbaran Bay.

Topography of the island

Bali lies 3.2 km east of Java and approximately 8 degrees south of the equator. East to west, the island is approximately 153 km wide and 112 km north to south (95 by 69 miles, respectively), with a surface area of 5,632 km². The highest point is Mount Agung at 3,142 m (10,308 feet) high, an active volcano that last erupted in March 1963. Mountains cover centre to the eastern side, with Mount Agung the easternmost peak. Mount Batur (1,717 m) is also still active. About 30,000 years ago it experienced a catastrophic eruption — one of the largest known volcanic events on Earth.

In the south the land descends to form an alluvial plain, watered by shallow rivers, drier in the dry season and overflowing during periods of heavy rain.

The principal cities are the northern port of Singaraja, the former colonial capital of Bali, and the present provincial capital and largest city, Denpasar, near the southern coast. The town of Ubud (north of Denpasar), with its art market, museums and galleries, is arguably the cultural center of Bali.

There are major coastal roads and roads that cross the island mainly north-south. Due to the mountainous terrain in the island’s center, the roads tend to follow the crests of the ridges across the mountains. There are no railway lines.

The island is surrounded by coral reefs. Beaches in the south tend to have white sand while those in the north and west black sand. The beach town of Padangbai in the south east has both: the main beach and the secret beach have white sand and the south beach and the blue lagoon have much darker sand. Pasut Beach, near Ho River and Pura Segara, is a quiet beach 14 km southwest of Tabanan. The Ho River is navigable by small sampan. Black sand beaches between Pasut and Klatingdukuh are being developed for tourism, but apart from the seaside temple of Tanah Lot, this is not yet a tourist area.

To the east, the Lombok Strait that separates Bali from Lombok marks the biogeographical division between the fauna of the Indomalayan ecozone and the distinctly different fauna of Australasia that is known as the Wallace Line, for Alfred Russel Wallace, who first remarked upon the distinction between these two major biomes. When sea levels dropped during the Pleistocene ice age, Bali was connected to Java and Sumatra and to the mainland of Asia and shared the Asian fauna, but the deep water of the Lombok Strait continued to keep Lombok and the Lesser Sunda archipelago isolated.

Economy

Three decades ago, the Balinese economy was largely agriculture-based in terms of both output and employment. Tourism is now the largest single industry; and as a result, Bali is one of Indonesia’s wealthiest regions. The economy, however, has suffered significantly as a result of the terrorist bombings of 2002 and 2005.

Although in terms of output, tourism is the economy’s largest industry, agriculture is still the island’s biggest employer[citation needed], most notably rice cultivation. Crops grown in smaller amounts include fruit, vegetables and other cash and subsistence crops.[citation needed] A significant number of Balinese are also fishermen. Bali is also famous for its artisans who produce batik and ikat cloth and clothing, wooden carvings, stone carvings and silverware.

Although significant tourism exists in the north, centre and east of the island, the tourist industry is overwhelmingly focused in the south. The main tourist locations are the town of Kuta (with its beach), and its outer suburbs (which were once independent townships) of Legian and Seminyak, Sanur, Jimbaran, Ubud, and the newer development of Nusa Dua. The Ngurah Rai International Airport is located near Jimbaran, on the isthmus joining the southernmost part of the island to the main part of the island. Another increasingly important source of income for Bali is what is called “Congress Tourism” from the frequent international conferences held on the island, especially after the terrorist bombings of 2002; ostensibly to resurrect Bali’s damaged tourism industry as well as its tarnished image.

Bali’s tourism brand is Bali Shanti Shanti Shanti.[3] Where Shanti derived from Sanskrit “Çantih” meaning peace.

Demographics

The population of Bali is 3,151,000 (as of 2005).

Religion

Unlike most of Muslim-majority Indonesia, about 93.18% of Bali’s population adheres to Balinese Hinduism, formed as a combination of existing local beliefs and Hindu influences from mainland Southeast Asia and South Asia. Minority religions include Islam (4.79%), Christianity (1.38%), and Buddhism (0.64%). These figures do not include immigrants from other parts of Indonesia.

Bali consists of about three million people, nearly all of whom practice the Balinese Hindu religion, a heterogeneous amalgam in which gods and demigods are worshipped together with Buddhist heroes, with the spirits of ancestors and with indigenous deities associated with agriculture and with places considered sacred. Religion as it is practiced in Bali is a composite belief system that embraces not only theology, philosophy, and mythology, but ancestor worship, animism and magic. It is supposed to pervade every aspect of traditional life.

Bali Hinduism, which has roots in Indian Hinduism and in Buddhism, adopted the animistic traditions of the indigenes, which inhabited the island around the first millennium BCE. This influence strengthened the belief that the gods and goddesses are present in all things. Every element of nature, therefore, possesses its own power, which reflects the power of the gods. A rock, tree, dagger, or woven cloth is a potential home for spirits whose energy can be directed for good or evil. Balinese Hinduism is deeply interwoven with art and ritual, and is less closely preoccupied with scripture, law, and belief than Islam in Indonesia. Ritualizing states of self-control are a notable feature of religious expression among the people, who for this reason have become famous for their graceful and decorous behavior.

Balinese and Indonesian are the most widely spoken languages in Bali, and like most Indonesians, the vast majority of Balinese people are bilingual or trilingual. There are several indigenous Balinese languages, but most Balinese can also use the most widely spoken option: modern common Balinese. The usage of different Balinese languages was traditionally determined by the Balinese caste system and by clan membership, but this tradition is diminishing.

English is a common third language (and the primary foreign language) of many Balinese, owing to the requirements of the large tourism industry. Staff working in Bali’s tourist centres are often, by necessity, multilingual to some degree, speaking as many as 8 or 9 different languages to an often surprising level of competence.

Culture

Bali is renowned its diverse and sophisticated art forms, such as painting, sculpture, woodcarving, handcrafts, and performing arts. Balinese percussion orchestra music, known as gamelan, is highly developed and varied. Balinese dances portray stories from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana but with heavy Balinese influence. Famous Balinese dances include pendet, legong, baris, topeng, barong, and kecak (the monkey dance).

The Hindu new year, Nyepi, is celebrated in the spring by a day of silence. On this day everyone stays at home and tourists are encouraged to remain in their hotels. On the preceding day large, colorful sculptures of ogoh-ogoh monsters are paraded and finally burned in the evening to drive away evil spirits. Other festivals throughout the year are specified by the Balinese pawukon calendrical system.

National education programs, mass media and tourism continue to change Balinese culture. Immigration from other parts of Indonesia, especially Java, is changing the ethnic composition of Bali’s population.
The Balinese eat with their right hand, as the left is impure, a common belief throughout Indonesia. The Balinese do not hand or receive things with their left hand and would not wave at anyone with their left hand.

Environment and wildlife

Bali has around 280 species of birds, including the critically endangered Bali Starling. The only endemic mammal of the island, the Bali tiger, became extinct in the 1930s. The Bali Barat National Park is a refuge for wildlife such as the pangolin, common muntjac, chevrotain, leopard cat, black giant squirrel, macaque and leaf monkey.

South Korea’s Kim Jung-woo (L) and his team celebrate after he scored the goal against Indonesia during their 2007 AFC Asian Cup Group D soccer match in Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta July 18, 2007. [Reuters]

Kim Jung-woo’s first-half strike Wednesday was enough for victory for the South Koreans, who were helped greatly by Saudi Arabia’s 4-0 win over Bahrain in Palembang.

South Korea started the game in last place with one point from its opening two games and was dependent on other results in Group D.

The Taeguk Warriors finish second in Group D on four points, three behind winners Saudi Arabia. Indonesia and Bahrain collected three points each.

“We knew we had to win. We created many chances and we are ready for the next round,” Verbeek said. “We did what we had to do and gave almost no chances away. We played a good game. I am happy.”

The result meant disappointment for Indonesia and 90,000 fans in Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. A draw would have been enough for the co-hosts but their thrilling adventure in the competition ends.

“I am disappointed that we can’t continue in the Asian Cup but proud,” Indonesia coach Ivan Kolev said. “We fought ’til the death. From the first match until the third the players gave their best performance in what was a tough group.”

Kolev said he hoped that Indonesia can use the experience as a platform to better things.

“There are so many lessons we learned,” he said. “For sure, we will use these for a better Indonesian team. Hopefully, Indonesia will have a good team in the future.”

After all three goals conceded in the previous two games had been the result of crosses, Indonesian coach Ivan Kolev dropped usual goalkeeper Yandri Pitoy and drafted in the taller Markus Rihihina.

The replacement was busier than his Korean counterpart in a first half that saw the two-time champions have much of the play without creating too many clear opportunities.

El will face the Group C winner in the quarterfinal in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

That is likely to be Iran.

“I saw Iran play against China,” Verbeek said. “Of course they are one of the powers of Asian football. Let’s wait and see, it will be an interesting game, whoever the opponent will be.”
